A dark theme is more than black canvas and bright text. Comfortable dark work depends on moderate foreground contrast, visible surface steps, disciplined saturated color, and a background that does not create glare in the periphery.
Design perspective
Make the visual idea survive the work.
Pure black can look striking on OLED displays but makes adjacent near-black surfaces hard to distinguish. A deep charcoal or tinted navy canvas often gives sidebars, code blocks, and elevated panels more room to form a hierarchy.
The background should add depth at low intensity. A localized glow or broad gradient is easier on the eyes than thin high-contrast lines repeated across the whole display.
