Codex themes for designers
Designers can push a theme beyond generic dark mode, but the best result still behaves like a product surface. It needs a coherent material idea, intentional spacing, accessible interaction states, and artwork that survives real window geometry.
Design perspective
Define the system before polishing the hero frame. Name the canvas, elevated surface, code surface, foreground, muted foreground, border, accent, and semantic colors, then inspect how they interact over the chosen image.
Use the preview as a critique tool rather than a sales mockup. Home, dense task, dialog, and narrow views reveal different problems; a successful theme maintains its idea even after the decorative subject is mostly cropped away.
Adaptation guide
Document why each token exists so revisions change a system instead of nudging unrelated hex values.
Inspect hover, focus, selected, disabled, warning, and error states as carefully as the default surface.
Mark navigation, task, and dialog coverage before generating art, then keep the focal subject outside those zones.
Show light or dark alternatives and multiple ratios side by side so stakeholders compare behavior, not isolated beauty shots.

Practical answers
Provide palette references, exact brand values when relevant, approved logos, visual likes and dislikes, room-light preference, display ratios, and any licensed source imagery.
Do not assume font replacement is part of a supported theme pack. Focus the portable design on color, surfaces, composition, and optional background behavior unless a documented platform capability says otherwise.
At minimum review home, a dense task, code or output, a dialog, and a narrow window. Check 16:10, 16:9, and 4:3 crops when artwork is included.
Continue the brief
Pastel themes are defined by low chroma and high lightness, not by weak contrast. Soft pink, lavender, mint, peach, and sky can support serious work when text, borders, and active states use a firmer neutral structure.
Read the guide →Theme stylesEditorial themes borrow from books, magazines, and studio layouts: warm paper, deliberate whitespace, disciplined rules, and a clear reading rhythm. They work best when the interface remains modern rather than imitating a printed page literally.
Read the guide →Platforms and setupTheme language can hide an important distinction. Native choices that Codex exposes in Appearance are different from a downloadable pack's visual tokens, and both are different from an advanced background supplied by an unofficial local compatibility layer.
